I recently started using my Samsung Monitor through an HDMI connection rather than DVI. I have used Samsung Monitors for a few years now since selling my 30″ Apple Cinema Display before they were discontinued. Samsung Monitors are very high quality and a fraction of the price. My eye (even with glasses on) can't tell much of a difference between an Apple Cinema Display and a Samsung. I only need my monitor to be a monitor. The extra features an Apple Cinema Display offer are nice, but I can live without them. However, in making this change to HDMI I encountered a few problems.

  1. January 2, 2020 I was snookered by an Amazon item that purported to support dual HDMI monitors. While it did have two outputs, it was strictly in 'mirrored' mode — the Mac saw only a single monitor. The OWC product actually supports two independent monitors, and works well, as advertised. I would recommend this item to a friend!
  2. USB C Hub for MacBook Pro, 8-in-2 Dual 4K Monitor Docking Station with 4K HDMI, MiniDP, USB 3.0, SD/TF Card Reader, USB C Adapter for MacBook Pro /2018/2017/2016 MacBook Air 2018/2019/2020 4.3 out of 5 stars 42.

My monitor is a 27″ Samsung S27A350H which offers an HDMI and VGA input. I was not about to connect my MBP through a VGA connection and loose valuable quality so I opted to connect through HDMI. To be honest, I didn't bother trying the VGA connection to test differences in quality.

On my desk, I have my laptop on a Twelve South Bookarc stand and I keep it closed. I use the external monitor as my only monitor. I have several HDMI cables ranging in quality. The HDMI Cables that I have been using for home audio and my computer are the MediaBridge cables that Amazon.com carries. They are quality cables at a cheap price. To connect the HDMI Cable to my MacBook Pro I am using the Moshi MiniDisplay Port to HDMI Adapter, which I also bought at Amazon.com.

More specifically, you'll need at least a 5th-generation iPad, an iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 4, or any iPad Pro. You'll also need a MacBook or MacBook Pro that was made in 2016 or later, a 2015.

The problem is that when I connect the Moshi adapter to my MacBook Pro and attempt to wake my computer by tapping a key on my Apple Wireless Keyboard, nothing happens. I checked that the Samsung monitor is turned on, the cables are connected, and that my MacBook Pro in hibernate mode. Everything was fine. If I opened my MacBook Pro with the HDMI connected, both monitors would come on and it would operate in dual display mode. However, once I closed my laptop, I could not get the monitor to come back on by itself. I also have a generic brand MiniDisplay Port to HDMI adapter which is horrible and makes the screen flicker. This is the only monitor that seems to have a problem with the cheaper adapter. As far as image quality goes, the Moshi adapter works perfectly.

After trying everything, I called Samsung, who was also unable to help. I did some searching online and all that I found is that many others were experiencing similar problems. Determined, as usual, I kept at it and found a few different things that seem to have solved the problem. A few forums even suggested that the Samsung Monitor does not work properly with Apple's way of detecting a monitor has been attached. It was also suggested that there were problems with many PC manufacturers as well, so it's not a specific issue to Apple.

Changing Settings – Go into Menu on your monitor and switch the Auto Source to Auto, by default it comes set to Manual. You can get to this menu option by tapping menu twice to get it to come up, selecting Setup&Reset, then go down to Auto Source.

The first time I did this it seemed to work right away, however, the next day I came into work and plugged in I had the same problem.

With this Samsung Monitor, it seems that you have to tap each button twice to get it to do anything unless the option is already on the screen. The second thing I did was tap the Source button on the monitor twice. This switched sources from one to the next. I assumed that since the screen kept toggling back and forth between Analog and HDMI that it was doing this on its own. It may have been but hitting the source button twice seems to have made it work once again.

Performing this song and dance each time I connect my MacBook Pro to the Samsung Monitor got old really fast so I opted to try a different workaround.

Changing Cables – The solution that fixed the problem was purchasing an HDMI to DVI cable from Amazon.com and using my MiniDisplay Port to DVI adapter. This makes me believe that the problem is not so much in the Samsung Monitor or the MacBook Pro as it is the Moshi adapter. I can not confirm that the Moshi adapter is the problem as it does work perfectly in all other situations including a situation where I connect my MacBook Pro to a projector through HDMI over a 50-foot cable without any issues. I have no idea who to blame for my frustration, all I know is that it works great now.

The other fix would be to just use the monitor with your VGA adapter where you may lose some image sharpness but not have any connection issues.

Does this make me want to return my Samsung 27″ monitor that I paid $300 for to exchange it for a $999 Apple Cinema Display? To be honest I thought about it for a moment but it's not worth the extra money.

I hope that one of these suggestions helps you with your Samsung/MBP issues if you are having any.

Everybody loves more screen space, especially programmers. And in today's work environment most development teams and coders work off laptops (usually Macs). So the real struggle is finding more of it. As soon as I sit down, I immediately look for an external monitor to plug into. If possible to connect to two monitors, then I am really in luck. But the white whale of laptop setups is connecting three monitors to one laptop. Today, I'm going to share how I did it!

Computer

First things first, your computer has got to be able to handle the number of pixels it's going to be pushing. I'm letting you know right off the hop, a 13' MacBook Pro cannot handle three displays regardless of the resolution. Two is the max, but you can keep the laptop open so it like 2.5 monitors.

I got my triple monitor setup working with my 15', 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB memory, Radeon Pro 450 2 GB Intel HD Graphics 530 1536 MB, MacBook Pro. If you would like to know everything I use in my setup, check out my article on it at https://fullsnackdeveloper.com/2018/12/12/10-essentials-for-my-computer-setup/.

Dongle

One of the most important things about making the triple monitor setup work is the dongle. Now I'm going to save my rant on the dongle life for another time but you need to choose the right dongle. I recommend the iHaper USB-C hub because it's the one I use and its worked great. If you go with another dongle/hub, make sure that it has at least one HDMI port (for monitor), one USB-C port (for power), and one standard USB port (for keyboard).

Cables

This is one that I think a lot of people don't think of when they're getting their setup wired. Since the MacBook Pro's only have USB-C inputs you either have to use a converter to connect your HDMI monitor or, and this is the one I use, you buy HDMI to USB-C cables. You will also need just a regular HDMI cable as well that will plug into the dongle.

Monitors

Three monitors is the max that a 15' MacBook Pro can handle but only one can be 4k. The others need to be 1080p. You can, however, have the laptop open as another display. 13' MacBooks can only handle two external displays and they cannot be 4k. If you're more interested in quality then, you can connect two 4k monitors to your 15' MacBook.

Laptop Stand

This is not necessary but if you're like me and like to keep the desk clutter to a minimum, it's a huge help. I use the Arc upright laptop stand. It keeps the cable chaos under control as well as looking pretty cool.

Connecting

  1. The laptop must be on or sleeping (must not be shutdown)
  2. Plug the regular HDMI cable into dongle and monitor
  3. Plug power cable into dongle and power source (When multiple displays are plugged in, the laptop must be plugged in to operate)
  4. Plug keyboard into the dongle (optional if you plan on using the laptop as a display)
  5. Connect HDMI-to-USB-C cables to monitors.
  6. Plug the dongle into one side of the laptop
  7. Connect the other two HDMI-to-USB-C cables to the laptop
  8. Click mouse or type on the keyboard to wake up the laptop
  9. Monitors should now all be displaying

Settings

To change the arrangement of the screens, go to System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement. You can now click and drag around how you would like your setup. A red border will signify the display that you are moving. You can also change the resolutions and other settings here to customize your setup.
